How long will my baby be teething?
Truth is, teething happens as a result of your baby’s primary (baby) teeth coming in. The pain can be intermittently on and off, with no true pattern and last for months.
How do you know if your baby is teething?
Most babies show little to no discomfort during the day, but a few signs can be that they have excessive drooling or increased biting and sucking, irritability and low-grade fevers. Most often, your baby’s teething is more bothersome when laying down for naps or bedtime.
Can I use Orajel or other teething gels?
We do not recommend the use of over the counter teething gels that contain benzocaine, other numbing agents or belladonna, a toxic substance often found in homeopathic remedies. The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry discourages their use due to the potential toxicity in babies and infants.
What can you do to soothe your teething baby?
Here are 5 tips you can use to soothe your teething baby:
- Place a clean damp wash cloth dipped in water in the freezer- just two simple ingredients! Letting your baby chew on the corner will allow the coldness to provide a numbing sensation. Monitor your child’s use of a washcloth. Allow chewing for 5 minutes and remove from your child’s mouth to avoid freezing and hurting their mouth.
- Teething rings: This is a tried and true option. There are so many that have ridges and raises used to rub and soothe the gums. Avoid teething toys with beads or small parts that can come off because this can cause choking.
- *Hack: dip the ring in cold water for added numbing effect*
- Gum massage: Place a clean wash cloth around your index finger and gingerly massage gums. We all love a good massage.
- OTC Children’s Tylenol or Motrin taken as recommended can help relieve discomfort *talk with your pediatrician before offering your baby OTC*
- White noise music while baby sleeps- this can be distracting and soothing
